Fisherman's Wharf Moo and Nusamai Bridge

The City of Kushiro is situated at 43 degrees N latitude and 144 degrees E longitude. Kushiro Shitsugen National Park provides a backdrop of stunning natural beauty. Residing on Hokkaido's Eastern Pacific seaboard, Kushiro is experiencing steady growth as an important social, economic, and cultural centre for Eastern Hokkaido.

Kushiro Marsh is the largest wetland in Japan, accounting for 60% of Japan's wetland. It was designated under the Ramsar Convention in 1980, and became Japan's 28th National Park in 1987.
As the marsh is one of the greatest treasure-houses of flora and fauna in Japan, its protection, preservation, and wise use are promoted by a national agreement.

Japanese Cranes
(Tancho)

The Japanese Crane was more familiar to Japanese people and used to be seen in many places in Japan. Their number, however, decreased in the Meiji Era because of over hunting and environmental changes, and they were thought in the late 19th century to be@almost extinct. About ten cranes were discovered surviving in the depths  of  the Kushiro-Shitsugen 70 years ago. During the winter season  when the cranes could not find enough food, farmers began to feed them corn. Since then, the feeding during winter season has continued.
